Health of the Industry
T
hank you to everyone who participated in the Marina Dock Age Annual Industry Survey. By compiling the results of questions regarding profits, revenues, and expenses, we are able to obtain a complete analysis of the marina industry. As expected, marina expenses have increased due to inflation and supply chain issues. While 85 of respondents reported an increase in expenses, mostly due to higher costs for maintenance and utilities, marinas continue to see strong occupancy rates, signaling that recreational boating is still going strong. You can see the full survey on page 12. This issue also highlights two of our Marina of the Year winners. Our 2022 large Marina of the Year, Charlestown Marina, is located on the East Coast, in Boston Harbor's famous Charlestown Navy Yard. The 371-slip marina welcomes boaters from around the world, while also serving as home to 60 liveaboard residents. The seven-acre marina has developed an impressive loyalty program and a series of environmental initiatives that now play an integral role in the daily operations at the facility. Read more about the operations and amenities at Charlestown Marina on page 6. Over on the West Coast resides the Port of Anacortes, Cap Sante Marina, the winner of the 2022 Marina Dock Age Customer Service award. With more than 1,000 slips, Cap Sante Marina is the second largest marina in the state of Washington. In order to operate a facility of this size, marina management has developed a series of unique programs that benefit both the staff and customers. Turn to page 32 to read about how Cap Sante Marina focuses just as much on staff satisfaction as customer satisfaction. The second part in our series covering marina fire safety can be found on page 22. This article highlights some of the fire scenarios facing marinas, how owners and operators can prevent these tragedies, and how to react should a fire break out at your facility. We received a lot of positive feedback following the first part in this series, which was published in the March issue. Addressing topics like fire safety is just as important to the Marina Dock Age staff as it is to you. It is our job to educate, inform, and focus on the issues affecting the marine industry, so we welcome your ideas or suggestions for future articles or topics you would like us to cover.
